Research Paper Tips: Show Your Point Of View

Imagine how frustrating it is to do everything in your power to get your point across in a research paper yet you fail to do so? Not only do you feel like you have wasted your time, but your self-confidence in your writing skills may take a hit and affect the way you write other research papers. The point of a research paper is to state your point of view and back it up with facts; failing to do so essentially means you have failed your paper.

Students tend to think if they use big words or ‘speak loudly’ throughout their paper that they are getting their point across. This is simply not the case. There are certain things a student can do to get effectively and efficiently establish their point of view. If you think about it, these things can also be applied to real life situations as well.

How to Establish Your Point Of View

Check out these tips on making sure you establish your point of view in your research paper:

  • Make your point of view clear- This one may seem like it is common sense, but sometimes students have a hard time clarifying their position on a topic. If you don’t know what your point of view is how, will anyone else?
  • Back it up with facts- Your point of view is not enough to establish a good research paper; you need to back up your view with concrete facts.
  • Reiterate your point of view of a few times throughout the paper- In other words, facts are great but throwing in too many without talking about your main point will most likely confuse the reader or get them off track.
  • Be mindful of your word choice- Using descriptive words whenever possible will help you establish your point of view. Also, be mindful that your word choices will also dictate the tone of the paper as well. If you want your research paper to have a lighter tone, avoid heavy and boring words.

As you can see, it is pretty easy to get your point established in various areas of your research paper. Start by making it clear in the introductions followed by different places in the body of the paper. You can wrap up your research paper in the conclusion where you can once again establish your viewpoint. Again, just make sure it is clear and concise.
