Coming up with new research paper topics can be the hardest part of any course. You have to do something new, something interesting, something relevant, and sometimes all you want to do is curl up and have some one hand you the answers. So make your life that little bit easier and follow these guidelines to choosing the right topic for you.
If you have a couple of ideas, or even if you’re completely stumped, grab a few friends and colleagues, go out for drinks or coffee or ice-cream, and sit around talking about, well, everything. In a group think session, no idea is a bad idea. You never know what you mind come up with, and sometime it’s only when someone throws a curve-ball that you really get thinking about the interesting stuff.
Let’s say you have a few general ideas and you’re not sure which one to go for. Take a couple of pages and make spider diagrams for each idea. Try to extrapolate as much information as you can. Again, no idea is too weird or wrong at this stage. Just think, think and over-think. If you get stuck with only a few ideas at this point, you’ll know that topic is not for you. If you find yourself wandering off into tangents, you’ll know you’ll have to focus your idea some more. If you have the goldilocks amount, then you can be sure you’ve found something worth talking about.
If you are fairly settled on a topic but aren’t sure you want to do it or aren’t sure you have enough to talk about, make a detailed plan. Break it down chapter by chapter, heading to sub-heading. If you get stuck at this stage, scrap it and start again. You should have enough to make three major points, with each major point containing three minor points. If not, you could be in some serious trouble and it’s back to the drawing board for you.
The best way to start picking a topic is to start with something you’re interested in, something you already have knowledge about, something you’re passionate about. Your end product might change along the way, but at least if you start by thinking of the things you like you’ll make life easier on yourself. Don’t pick a topic because other people told you to, pick it because you want to do it.
