Writing an argumentative research paper: how to be convincing

When you are writing a paper, it is important for you to brainstorm a list of potential ideas. Once this is done, you want to make sure that your idea is refined and narrowed enough to adhere to your instructions or assignment details. Research topics should be fluid, they should be flexible enough to move with the ongoing research and change as necessary. Remember to embrace this fluidity, rather than find it frustrating.

If you are struggling to get ideas for your paper, consider reviewing the following:

  • Look over your textbooks or your course material and see if there is a topic of interest to you.
  • Brainstorm for a bit and see if you can find a concept that really appeals to you. Use a concept map or mind map to further explore potential topics.
  • Review news sites and see if there are recent events that perhaps pique your interest, or if there is some recent events whose history you can use for the paper.
  • Use reliable educational resources on the web to find research topics.

Select a topic that is interesting to you. There is more motivation for you to finish your assignment if you actually like the topic compared to a topic in which you have no genuine interest. IF your research topic is unrestricted, and you have the freedom to pick whatever you want, use that to your advantage. Pick something related to your personal experiences. Find an issue that is personally relevant to you and write about it. IF you don’t have any personal interest in your assigned topic, take some time to consider the various aspects of it and see if you have any curiosity about an aspect and want to learn more.

Then you have to narrow your topic. You will need to ensure your topic can be adequately covered in the required length of your paper. You want to make sure you can cover the topic in the number of pages. Your original topic might be narrowed by focusing on a particular group, a particular time period, a particular person, or a particular place. If you need to broaden your topic, usually something done for papers that are 20 pages or longer, you can try to alter your subject matter to focus on a larger aspect of the issue or the person, or broaden the scope to cover an entire industry, rather than one facet of the industry in question.
